The Highland Expedition 

Across the Southern Highlands is a 5-day Riding Journey for experienced riders, travelling with a free-running herd through the remarkable landscapes of South Iceland. 

We set out from Minni-Vellir beneath Hekla and travel onwards each day, following old riding routes through farmland, volcanic foothills, mountains, woodlands and river valleys. 

Each day's ride has a destination. The horses remain where the day's riding ends and, the following morning, we rejoin them and continue our Journey. Along the way we change horses regularly, sharing the work across the herd as the landscape changes around us. 

Our route takes us first towards the roots of Hekla before climbing into the Highlands and continuing beneath Þríhyrningur. We spend one night with the horses at Foss mountain hut; on the other evenings, our support vehicle brings us back to Minni-Vellir while the horses remain out on the route. 

Five days after setting out, horses and riders complete the circle together, riding all the way back home to Minni-Vellir beneath Hekla. 

Across the Southern Highlands is a true journey across South Iceland on horseback – five days travelling with the herd through ever-changing landscapes, setting out from beneath Hekla and riding all the way home again.
