Landmannalaugar Expedition 
The Wilderness Journey 

Landmannalaugar Expedition is a six-day Riding Journey for experienced riders, travelling from the farmland beneath Hekla into one of Iceland's most extraordinary Highland landscapes and back again. 

We set out from Minni-Vellir on individual horses, beginning our Journey towards the Highlands. This first stage gives riders and guides time to get to know one another and settle into the riding before we meet the free-running herd at Hrólfsstaðahellir. From there, we continue with the herd, changing horses regularly as green farmland gradually gives way to ash, sand, lava and mountains. 

Our destination is Landmannahellir, where horses and riders spend two nights together in the Highlands. Here, the rhythm of the Journey changes. We give the herd a well-earned rest and spend a day exploring differently, riding individual horses along quieter Highland trails and into secluded corners of the landscape that are not suited to travelling with a free-running herd. Later, we travel into Landmannalaugar itself, with time to explore its colourful rhyolite mountains and relax in the natural geothermal spring. 

Then we rejoin the herd and begin our Journey home, travelling through the volcanic country north and west of Hekla before the landscape gradually becomes greener again and Minni-Vellir comes back into view. 

Landmannalaugar Expedition is a Journey into the wilderness and back again – travelling with the herd into the Highlands, taking the time to experience them, and riding all the way home.
